KM Racing, Breaking & Pre Training

A friendly family run yard, we welcome you to join in on the fun and laughter but most importantly…winners! A young and dedicated team, that strive for success.

Just a quick insight into my life so far…

My name is Kelly Morgan, my father trained for over 40 years and my sister is the talented trainer Laura Morgan.

Training racehorses was always in my blood. From 16 years old I enjoyed some success riding between the flags and quite quickly got the bug for it. However, training was always going to be my focus for the future. After a dozen winners and becoming the midlands area leading lady rider, in 2016 the decision was made to hang up my boots and now it was time to focus on training. This paid dividends, as many successes were to follow including a listed success and in 2019 a dream came true, when I trained Top Wood to win the aintree foxhunters.

I spent 10 happy successful years working for Sir Johnny Weatherby, training the racehorses and running Preston lodge Stud. Here I gained so much valuable knowledge, including foaling mares, handling and producing youngstock for the sales ring, training and preparing horses to go into training.

In January 2021 I made the decision to move back to our family home, Foxfield stud, Waltham on the Wolds in the heart of Leicestershire, the base of my sister Laura Morgan, to set up on my own. Laura kindly lets me share her facilities.

Since moving home we have enjoyed 30 winners in my first two seasons training, including a Cheltenham HC winner. We have a small string of point to pointers, during the winter months. Our summers are filled with pre training, breaking in and producing young horses.

Foxfield stud boasts some top class facilities in itself, with the Croxton Park gallops only being a mile up the road, we are very fortunate to have the use of one of the best grass gallops in the country.

Woodchip straight gallop

We have a 6 furlong straight woodchip gallop, this is used for the horses fast work with a very small incline it’s great for younger horses that don’t necessarily want to be trained on a stiff hill gallop.

Deep sand round gallop

We have a 2 and a half furlong deep sand round gallop. This facility is very good for building up the horses core fitness and is used on a daily basis. It also helps to regulate the horses breathing and is very good for building and strengthening, whilst also ensuring the horses are relaxed.

Grass gallops

Croxton park is an old racecourse, it is 2miles round on beautiful old free draining turf. The perfect place to educate young horses and prepare them for their first racecourse experience.

Schooling facilities

We have 6 schooling fences in a line with two ditches and 3 flights of hurdles. We have a small jumping lane with barrels and tyres to get the young horses jumping. We also have a double sided hurdle in our ménage with barrels and poles to enable us to jump the horses, when the grass isn’t suitable.

All weather school

We use the school on a daily basis, when using the round gallop we warm up in here. We believe it’s important for the horses to learn to balance themselves and do flatwork. This is also vital when we break young horses in, we also have a mesh pen that we pop up in the school if needed.

Outdoor pens

We feel that plenty of airflow is excellent for horses respiratory systems, equally it’s good for horses to interact with one another. This keeps them calm healthy and happy. The horses enjoy the pens so they have more freedom to behave naturally.

Turnout paddocks

With most of the horses living in outdoor pens, the need for turnout is not as essential, however we do try and get the horses in the field as much as possible, to get their heads down and enjoy some freedom and doctor green.

Danni Harris

Head Girl

Danni has been someone I have known since I was a little girl, her knowledge is invaluable. She’s fantastic with all the ground work with the young horses, riding work and her horse care is second to none. Danni enjoys going racing, where the horses are always turned out to a very high standard. The most important thing is she always has a huge smile on her face, rain snow or shine.

Ellie Callwood

Amateur jockey

Ellie joined us at the start of this season as our stable jockey, she’s a very hard worker and deserves all the opportunities she gets. Ellie comes from a horsey background and having done a lot of showing and working hunter to a very high standard, she has also hunted and produced ponies/horses since she was a kid. Ellie spent 3 years, with champion point to point trainer Tom Ellis, where she gained a wealth of experience in racing and also breaking in the young horses. Last year she spent the summer in America riding track work, followed by a month with Henry De Bromhead, to gain more experience. Ellie is an invaluable member of the team.

Poppy Shaw

Apprentice/full time

Since joining the team on an apprenticeship, Poppy's knowledge and riding has come on leaps and bounds. So much so that we hope to get Poppy on the racecourse next season. She’s a very capable rider and I will push hard to keep on improving her and giving her as many opportunities to improve her riding as we can. Most importantly, she has a great sense of humour and you normally find her eating chocolate throughout the morning!

Alice Walker

Part time help

Alice joined me from the first day I set up on my own, she helps out as much as she can around her full time job, as she loves her point to pointing. You will often see Alice leading up at the races on her days off from her day job. There’s always a lot of laughter when Alice is around!

Tommy Morgan

Farrier

Tommy has a keen interest in the racing and is a big part of the team ensuring that the horses feet are kept in tip top condition.

Antonia Bealby

Veterinary physio

Antonia is a big part of keeping our horses in good form, any physical issues they may have are discussed and resolved as quickly as possible.

Meisha Micklewright

Equine vet dentist

Meisha ensures all our horses teeth are in good health, she’s very professional and is fantastic at her job. Meisha is often in riding out too, so she gets to know all the horses which is a big help.

Ownership opportunities
Syndicates, sole ownership or a partnership.

There are many options to suit many different budgets, please do get in touch to discuss, if ownership is something you would like more information on.

We currently run two syndicates who have both enjoyed plenty of winners and fun days out to the races, picnics, weekly updates and videos of your horse, regular yard visits, bring the family along and enjoy a bacon roll, cuppa and meet other likeminded people. It’s a friendly laid back atmosphere here at Foxfield stud.

Training Point to pointers/hunter chasers

Whether it’s a horse you currently have and wish to send to us to train, or maybe you would like to purchase a horse to go point to pointing. We have a great record at purchasing and training horses to get the very best out of them. Our dream is to win the Cheltenham foxhunters, having got so close in 2018 we want to be back in that famous winners enclosure again, we won’t stop trying until we make this happen.

Breaking in/backing horses

The team here will give your horse the best start possible, with it being a busy yard it is good to get the young horses used to plenty going on and normalised quickly. Danni spends plenty of time long reining and lunging. Doing the ground work right, enables the breaking process to run smoothly.

Pre training/rehabilitation

We most often have young horses in to pre train and educate before they go on into training. We do also cater for older horses who may need a change of scenery to sweeten up, or that are coming back from an injury and may need to be brought back into work slowly, before heading into training. We do a lot of flatwork and core fitness work to build up our horses topline. We have a lot of hacking and hills to do steady hill work.

Costs

Our price per day for training point to pointers, breaking and Pre training are all £35+VAT per day per horse. We pride ourselves on giving horses the best care and no corners will be cut in doing this. Racing fees, entries, travel expenses, farrier, physio and vets fees are not included in this price.
